Recap | Cevolutión Public Art Exhibit

Recap | Cevolutión Public Art Exhibit

As Cebu grows into a burgeoning metropolis, our art scene and creative culture should grow along with it. Last July 15, eight murals were unveiled on the exterior walls of Crossroads Cebu to explore the evolution of Cebu inspired by the growth and development in the city. Headed by Create Cebu, the CEVOLUTIÓN Public Art Exhibit was a step in the right direction in terms of cultivating the growth of our rich creative talent and providing a venue for artists and enthusiast in the city.  Featuring the work of contemporary Cebuano artists KIDLAT, DAOT, Lean Reboja, Golda King, Ronyel Compra, and Ivan Zaldarriaga, CEVOLUTIÓN highlighted the diversity of imagination, skill, and talent of local artists as well as increase access to and awareness of Cebuano art.

Despite the rich creative and artistic talent that we have in Cebu, we have never been thought of as a destination for creative culture and arts. We are more known for Sinulog, white-sand beaches, and Lechon than we are for our artistry and creative talent, and while we are very proud to be known for all those mentioned, we should also start motivating, cultivating, and elevating our creative identity. We believe opportunities afforded by events such as CEVOLUTIÓN is a great way to show the Cebuanos that yes, art should be part of a growing economy and should coexist with technology and even commerce.  Public art installations should also demonstrate that beyond recognition and a “pat on the back”, artists also deserve proper monetary compensation for their work. After all, just like any professional, they’ve studied and worked hard on their craft for years, and spends hours, days, even weeks creating murals and artwork for the enjoyment of everyone.

Will Cebu ever be known as an art and culture capital or destination? With the talent that we have, it’s not impossible. With the right attitude towards art, and through proper support from both public and private sector, our creative community should continue to thrive in the years to come.

The event also featured a Pop-up Print & Sticker Sale by A SPACE Cebu, a Gallery-Store Flash Sale by Holicow PH, and a Mini Music Fest presented by 22 Tango Records  featuring THINKING CHAIR, THE CRISIS, THREE-LEGGED MEN, LOOP, GROOVEMATICS, SILINGAN NI FELICITY, and BETHANY. Though the rain was pouring heavily that day, it didn’t stop the festivities at all. CEVOLUTIÓN had the perfect mix of art and music and was one of the most organized events we’ve been to in Cebu. This bodes well for the future and had set the bar high for events to come.

Check out some photos that Matt Blanes and RJ Galgo took at the event below and stay tuned for the video recap by the CEVOLUTIÓN documentation crew by following Create Cebu’s Facebook page.

The second installment from GUESS Originals and A$AP Rocky’s collaboration is headed our way. Aptly named “Ice Cream and Cotton Candy”, the offering follows its inaugural launch, which was also complemented by its GUE$$ Club drop back in March.

The collection takes inspiration from the 80’s and 90’s, with spring/summer pastel hues on a number of the pieces. Its staple striped and co-branded T-shirts return while new color options enter the fold. You’ll also find a new striped dress in addition to a cropped version of its black and white co-branded tees.

Lead by A$AP Rocky and his creative group AWGE, the A$AP Rocky x GUESS Originals “Ice Cream and Cotton Candy” collection will launch on July 14 at GUESS SM City Cebu. Check out the looks from the collection below and click here to know the pricing of the items.

Chad Manzo Combines Global Street Culture With Pinoy Pop Culture

Salty By Chad Manzo

Chad Manzo, the graphic designer behind ‘The Sartorial Zone, and ‘This is Madness‘ is back with another design series called ‘Salty’. The author describes it as “a commentary on the influence of global street culture in the context of the Filipino.” Today’s technology has made the world smaller due to the fast and easy transfer of information over the internet. It no longer takes months, weeks, or days for any trend in the global community to reach the Philippines. We’re literally tuned-in up to the second to anything that happens around the world, and because of that, our music, fashion, and even media are highly influenced by a mostly western culture. In ‘Salty‘, the designer takes global trends and creatively combines them with things that we Filipinos are familiar with. Part comedic and part social commentary, Chad Manzo uses humor to show how we Filipinos have been so enamored with the global street/pop culture.

Take a look at the humorous and pun-filled renderings below. Which one is your favorite?

HOME: A Solo Exhibit By Wyndelle Remonde

What is home? For many of us, it’s family, friends, and loved ones. When asked, we can easily dig up stories of past experiences when we were kids, both good and bad, and always with nostalgia. Cebuano artist Wyndelle Remonde captures exactly that in his artworks shown at his solo exhibit in the Contempo Art Gallery at Bamboo Bay. A Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from UP Cebu, Wyndelle has been in the art scene for close to a decade now and has been involved with apparel/clothing design, murals, and graphic design, aside from drawing and painting.

In his latest solo exhibit, Wyndelle Remonde shows his vulnerable side, giving the audience a glimpse of what, for him, is home. Evident in his artworks are his past and present, as well as hopes and dreams, frustrations and fears, and most of all his passion. And that passion is something that he hopes will inspire others. I believe that an artist’s greatest strength lies in his vulnerability for in that moment, he can truly communicate a shared human experience.

We had the pleasure to visit and talk to the man behind the HOME exhibit. Check out our interview below.

What is HOME all about?

Home is a collection of new and past works, from previous shows outside Cebu that I have brought home in the hopes of sharing my art to fellow Cebuanos.

What was your inspiration for this exhibit?

It’s been a  while since my last exhibition in Cebu. Ang ako-a lang jd is ganahan ko i share ako’ng  works sa mga taga dri sa ato sa Cebu. Hoping to inspire some.

What do you think of the Cebu Art Scene?

I’m so happy on what’s going on sa scene. Everyone’s doing their very best para I saka ang scene sa ciudad. We are slowly but surely getting there. Nindot kaayo.

Any upcoming shows around the country?

Naay mga upcoming group shows in Bacolod this year, Pop up show dri sa Cebu, then hopefully ma okay ang solo show sa Manila sometime next year. I’m still working on it right now.

Artist Statement:

“Like you, my story begins at home. I have been making art since I was a kid and yet my career as an artist only began from the moment I graduated and earned my bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Major in Studio Arts. Through the years, I have been juggling my career as a professional artist by day, and a struggling artist by night. From illustrations to animation, acrylic paint to textile paint, silk screen to digital, group shows to solos, uncertainties to possibilities. The list is endless. And I’m not just talking about my unpaid bills.

Last year, I was given the opportunity to have my second solo exhibit at House of Frida in Bacolod and a couple more of group shows at Gallery Orange in Bacolod as well. It has been a surreal experience—pop surreal, to be exact! Displayed here are a mix of new and past works from previous shows that I have brought home in the hopes of sharing my art to fellow Cebuanos. That my story is just a thread woven into this bigger canvas that we share. I hope to inspire the young local artist in you to not only create but also grow. May you uncover the path that leads to your own story, your soul, and ultimately, your art.”
